Crew Gap Assessment:
Find the Gaps Before a Well Control Event Does
When a well control event happens, every person on location has a role to play. A Crew Gap Assessment evaluates whether each member of your crew — from floor hand to company man — actually knows what that role requires. Most crews have gaps. The question is whether you find them during a structured assessment or during an actual incident.
WHAT A CREW GAP ASSESSMENT IS
A Position-by-Position Evaluation of Your Crew’s Well Control Readiness

The Crew Gap Assessment is a structured, on-location evaluation conducted by Cudd Well Control specialists.
It is an interactive, conversation-based assessment that evaluates each crew member’s understanding of their specific job responsibilities, their equipment, and their role during a well control event.
The assessment covers every position on the rig: Company Man, Toolpusher/Rig Manager, Driller, Derrick Hand, Floor Hand, Motorman, and others as required. Where gaps are identified, the assessor provides immediate clarification on the spot.
WHAT GETS EVALUATED
Knowledge Areas Covered by Position
HOW THE ASSESSMENT WORKS
On Location, in Person, in Plain Language
Interactive Questioning
Assessors engage crew members individually or in small groups through structured, conversational questioning. The goal is to understand how each person thinks through a well control scenario — not to catch them out.
Immediate Clarification
When a crew member demonstrates a gap or uncertainty, the assessor addresses it in real time. Corrections are made in the moment, reinforcing learning immediately rather than waiting for a separate training session.
Equipment Familiarity Review
The assessor walks through the equipment your crew will actually use in an emergency — BOP controls, choke manifold, accumulator, TIW valves — confirming that each person understands the equipment’s function and their role in operating it.
Written Findings Report
You receive a written report documenting findings by position, with specific recommendations for targeted training where gaps were identified.
